Eye pressure is an important issue in determining glaucoma. High pressure may be a signal of glaucoma. The normal range of eye pressure is about 6 to 20, with an average eye pressure of 15 to 16. If the result is higher than 20, you may have the risk of having glaucoma, which may lead to eye sight loss and totally blindness if not treated in time. There are mainly two different methods for the measurement of fluid pressure in the eye for many years.

The first method is to measure the pressure of the cornea which is a small clear tissue on the front of the eye. Before this measurement, a drop of medicine with is drop to the eye in order to numb the eye for about five to ten minutes, so that the eyes wouldn’t feel discomfort. Meanwhile an orange dye is used to help reading the results. Then a small tip of instrument will lightly touch the cornea area of eye.

In the second method, the instrument will not touch the eyes. During the measurement, a small amount of air is puffed into the front of the eye. Then the cornea reflects an infrared light back to the instrument. The time it takes to reflect the light is correlated with the pressure in the eye. And a digital readout is obtained after the measurement. Both methods can give good indicators for the actual eye pressure, but they are just approximate results. Because there are many factors that influence the measurement. First, the readings are base on the average thickness of cornea, a little more than half of a millimeter. That means if your cornea is thinner than average the readings of eye pressure are lower than its real pressure. Before new technique developed, the only way to determine true pressure is by poking a hole in the eye which can only done on dead people. Besides, the different shape of different patient’s cornea can also influence the readings of eye pressure. For the last few years, a new generation of instrument having been developed to measure the thickness of the cornea and compensate for the aberrations of the result of eye pressure. And the new instrument can takes a hundred reading in a second and gives the average data as the final result so that the accuracy will be improved greatly. Besides, the new instrument can adjust its shape to match the curvature of the cornea dynamically to eliminate the aberrations caused by the structural effects.

However, the result measured by the new instrument is also not perfect. Because the eye pressure is not stable, it changes frequently at different times of the day. Nowadays, eye doctors need to read l range of daily eye pressure in order to determine the eye condition. More advanced ways for determining eye pressure with more accuracy should be developed in the future.
